This journey started with a school project, the girls were invited to take part in the Royal Canadian Legion’s Remembrance Day poster contest.
As a family, we encouraged Farrah and Whitney to take the project further—spending extra time, asking thoughtful questions, thinking about what remembrance and Canada’s history means and how to express it through their art.
Our Story
Whitney placed 1st at the Local, Regional, and Provincial levels, and then earned 2nd place Nationally—an honour that means her artwork will be displayed in Parliament as part of the Royal Canadian Legion’s Remembrance Day exhibit.
Farrah placed 1st at the Local and Regional levels, and went on to earn 2nd place at the Provincial level.
Their Achievements
For our family, this represents effort, curiosity, and a genuine connection to the importance of remembrance.
We would love the opportunity to travel to Ottawa to celebrate this achievement and see Whitney’s artwork on display in Parliament leading up to Remembrance Day. It would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our family.

Q & A:
Q: What was the inspiration for your poster?
A: Whitney
When I heard about the poster competition an idea popped into my head, I wanted the flowers to look simple but also complicated. My idea was for the Canada flag to look like the Canada flag but with some sparkle. I chose the words 'A poppy is to remember', 'Lest We Forget' and ‘We will remember’ not just to look like fancy writing but so they would have a loving meaning on the poster. I wanted the poster to look like pieces in a puzzle, so they all fit together just right, orderly, like how the crosses are shown in the fields.
A: Farrah
I chose to paint the Canadian flag in my picture as the sky, it is moving to represent the wind. I have different colored leaves to represent that the war ended in the Fall, November 11. I included the saying ‘Lest We Forget’ because I think it is important that we never forget how all the soldiers fought for Canada. The crosses are to acknowledge that people lost their lives. Poppies are in the foreground because they would grow on the battlefield.
Q: Does your family have a connection to the Legion or veterans?
A: Whitney and Farrah
Yes, on my Grandad’s side. Two of my Great-Great Uncles, Aircraftman 1st Class, Ian Machum and Warrant Officer Class II, Donald Machum, served and died in WWII. Major General WB Lindsay, and J. R Machum served in WWII and Lieutenant Arthur L. Lindsay served and died in WWI. My Grandad, Robert Lindsay and his sister, Laura-Gene Pardoe visited Ottawa for the Remembrance Day ceremony to lay a wreath, to honour family members who served and died in the Great Wars and all other Veterans.
Q: What does winning this award mean to you?
A: Whitney
This was my first time entering the poster competition, I was not expecting to win so many levels. I feel very happy and proud to have won 2nd place in Canada. When the note came home, I felt really excited.
A: Farrah
This is my second year participating in the Legion poster contest. Last year I also entered the color poster contest, winning at the local level. I am so proud to have won 2nd place at the Provincial level this year to honour and represent my community because I think the subject is meaningful.
Q: What advice do you have for other young artists?
A: Whitney
Listen to your heart, if you feel like the art is not right, keep trying.
A: Farrah
If you have a passion for art, practice, have fun and work hard at it, your practice will pay off.
